this is a no brainer14 October 2008, from IP: 128.193.169.212 This just in: oompa loompas are revolting because of the last orange out.
Honestly? This is the 21st century - wtf is skin color anymore? This is ridiculous. If you are offended, move to Antarctica where noone will be around to make you feel bad about yourself. It is not meant to offend, we have come to that conclusion, so if you are offended, I think that it is a personal problem. Time to look in the mirror and stop feeling sorry for yourself IMO.
landforce12 October 2008, from IP: 24.21.158.255 Its not the white/black/orange/brown/yellow/green out that is the problem. Its the piece of trash who paints himself black and dresses like a thug and is yelling ignorant BS. You sir, can go jump off a cliff or something.
And I, personally, will not let the intolerant idiots of the world control my actions.
Lets all wear black shirts to the ASU game!
...it is an O....S....U.... FIRST DOWN!12 October 2008, from IP: 76.115.204.200 Democracy must balance the rights of the few against the will of the many. Are we respecting the rights of those few who are genuinely offended? I'm not going along with this. Think for yourself. Go Beavs!
Donnie10 October 2008, from IP: 71.59.166.117 If A black out offends black people... does a white out offend white people? Maybe it was just me but watching that Penn State game didn't hit any emotional nerves.
blackout is cooler than orange out10 October 2008, from IP: 98.232.209.44 Besides, no matter what anyone ever does there will always be someone who will totally take it the wrong way and be offended. We can never steer our lives, organizations and actions around everyone's toes. By banning blackouts, we may be showing the country that racism is still a big issue at Oregon State, which I do not believe is the case, here in 2008.
blackout is cooler than orange out10 October 2008, from IP: 98.232.209.44 Its sad when a few misguided people can spoil a great thing like the student body coming together in show of their beaver pride. It will be an even greater testament to Oregon State if we can get past the "blackface" debacle of last year.
I wonder if anyone ever thought to ask our Football Team what they think about a blackout... hmmm.....
same person as posted below10 October 2008, from IP: 209.237.75.130 I bet that no one would've even tied it to blackface had the barometer not printed the article... it's great to know history and all but this is just ridiculous! good grief!
OSU09 October 2008, from IP: 98.232.204.168 Did anyone care to notice that a couple weeks ago gerogia did a blackout of their stadium? As far as i know there were no complaints there. Are oakland raider fans being racist for painting their faces black?
Happy Girl09 October 2008, from IP: 24.21.154.227 I haven't read through all the comments, but I just wanted to say, I'm black and I was not in any way offended by the black out. What offended me was how everyone jumped on the harmless act of our OSU student body. It is not ignorant to take a theme and run with it. It is ignorant to make every, little thing we do in our day to day lives about race. If U of O did a yellow out, would Asians get offended? It is absolutely ridiculous to make race such a big part in our lives, still, in 2008. I'm not say that racism and prejudice don't still exist, because I have witnessed it. The point is, when you take something that has no malicious, ill-willed intent, and make it a racist problem, you make it really hard for us to move past things like this. Racism is a learned behavior. Give it a rest! Call me what you want, but I think the black out was an awesome idea last year and an even better idea this year!
long island09 October 2008, from IP: 98.232.173.102 and a white out at penn state is not the same as a black out "black face" white people were never treated in that awful manner. being white is a privilege. so dont be ignorant and try to compare the two. thanks-
landforce09 October 2008, from IP: 24.21.158.255 I was thinkin civil war... but I think we need to be reppin orange harder then ever for the civil war..
Grow a Pair09 October 2008, from IP: 98.232.191.120 I am all for another black-out. Was a great idea last year and still is. But let's not waste it on a Nov.1 game. I say we do it for Civil War!
Go beavs!
Hell yeah!09 October 2008, from IP: 67.160.137.116 Didn't Boston just do a black out as well? I think it is way more intimidating to see a black out than an orange out. Let's do it!
go beavs09 October 2008, from IP: 128.193.146.200 and p.s.
If we are concerned of that, why not put a statement into the Gazette stating that our intentions are not racist? Or get some permission from the black community?
go beavs09 October 2008, from IP: 128.193.146.200 So...I understand how people related the black face paint to blackface; however, being one of the students that was indeed painted completely in black, any thoughts of racism never crossed my mind. Call that ignorance if you will, but I don't think of it as ignorance at all. I am completely aware of the history in the United States, and feel that it's time to move on. We, the students of OSU, would like to celebrate the success of our school and carry on celebrating with our school colors. I say, bring on the Blackout.
Ashamed Beaver09 October 2008, from IP: 128.193.169.145 When will you guys learn? It offends people! Knock it off! What's wrong with Oranging-out Reser? By the way, our ONLY official school color is orange. Look it up.
asn109 October 2008, from IP: 71.193.142.113 just let us support our school in our school colors!!! Sorry if one of them happen to be black!! We just want to show SCHOOL SPIRIT!!!
laksdjfo09 October 2008, from IP: 24.21.158.255 We just did an Orange Out for the USC game....
we're talking about wearing black shirts... not about painting our faces black and lips white to resemble the "blackface".
There is sadly still lots of racism in our society today-- this is not an example of it
Benny Beaver09 October 2008, from IP: 24.20.237.171 why do it if people are offended. There are historical racial ties to black face. It may not hurt me, but why hurt others merely for our own pleasures? Arnt we creative enough to come up with another idea? Why not Orange out the stadium?
OSU I am disappointed. I thought our school could be a bit more creative and considerate
